I reviewed this title a few months ago, but the author has just released a revised version and I agreed to have another look at it. You can read my previous review here. Overall nothing much has changed with my review because I honestly didn't notice anything major that has changed with the book. The plot is still the same, the characters are largely still the same, though we might get a slight bit more on some of them. I think mostly it's been tightened up so that some superfluous stuff has been taken out and the whole thing flows just a bit smoother than it did. I also didn't notice any of the seeming anachronisms I commented on before, but that could be because I sort of expected them so didn't notice or pay so much attention to them. I don't really know what exactly was changed in this version to comment on things more precisely. I can say that I think this new version is improved a bit and is a smoother read, so I definitely still recommend it and the series as a whole as well.

You may wish to read Marc's Conflict first if you want some background on Marc that helps explain some of his actions here, but it isn't necessary. This one is fully understandable on its own.

Marc's Conflict by Sofia Grey

I've made little secret in the past about how much I love Sofia Grey's Talisman series as well as the stand-alones that are set in the same world and involve some of the same characters. Thus I was fairly confident going into this one that I was going to love it just as much as I have all the others. We've met most of the main players here in previous books (and if you've read them you kind of have a few spoilers for some of what happens here), but there are a few new faces as well. Their stories here are engaging, and the writing is certainly up to Ms. Grey's usual standards, but something wasn't fully there for me with it as a whole. Perhaps I simply was deliberately staying disengaged from some of the characters because I knew from previous books generally how their story would play out, even if I didn't know the specifics. Or perhaps having to read it in bits and pieces over the course of several weeks as I have to read most things these days is to blame. Whatever the case, though it is definitely a solid 4 stars for me, perhaps pushing close to 4.5 stars even, there were a few things that were a bit off-putting for me.

This book had a bit of a different feel to it from the first two in the series, mainly because of the tight focus on the two main characters. For the majority of the novel they are essentially alone as they roam around various small towns in Alaska, ostensibly making their way toward Anchorage while Caleb works on jobs along the way. Because of this, we get to know both of them fairly well, without the distractions of a whole cast of characters to keep track of. Sure there are other people around them now and then, but no one that figures in too prominently until the last several chapters.

This book was interesting because it takes the focus off the vampires a bit and highlights some of the other paranormal types a bit more. Besides the vampires, we've also seen a good bit of the werewolves, both in the Jane Jameson series and in the slightly related Naked Werewolf series (related only by virtue of taking place in the same universe for the most part). Now we get to see the witches a bit, or at least a witch. While the existence of witches has been mentioned before, we've never seen one, and the general advice before seemed to be "avoid them." This book proves that such isn't always necessary and that some of them can be quite handy to know.

After thoroughly enjoying the Jane Jameson series, I was looking forward to diving into this spin-off series to keep reading about Half-Moon Hollow and its quirky inhabitants. Overall I was not disappointed with this first entry in the series as it continued the tone and slightly irreverent humor of the first series quite admirably. Iris wasn't necessarily who I would have thought of to be the first heroine of the series, but she worked quite well, and Cal was, well, quite yummy.

The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf by Molly Harper

Maggie seemed rather different in this book from how she was in book one of the series. Perhaps because of the large amount of growing up she did at the end of that one. It also seems that leading the pack has already changed her as well. She's far less self-centered, less angry and prone to violence, and much more of a worry-wort. It takes some time to adjust to since you got used to thinking of her as Cooper's shrewish sister, but ultimately this Maggie is far more likeable.

Sofia Grey's novels rarely disappoint, and this one is no exception. Masterful at setting a mood, she quickly draws you into the various high emotions that surround Anita and Jon's romance, both their own and those of the people around them. This one is something of a two-in-one romance, for there is another couple that finds their HEA alongside Anita and Jon even though they are the main focus of the story. We are also introduced to another couple that rumor has it will be the main pair in an upcoming novel. These sideline stories do not detract in any way from the main story, but rather enhance it with the story of the secondary couple in particular helping to add to the angst that builds around Anita and Jon as their story progresses.

I was excited to hear that there was a new book out in the Witch's Night Out series as this has been one of my favorite series by Tara Quan. Even though each book only gives us a short glimpse into it, the world that she has built here seems very rich and full of possibilities. Most of them have been pretty sizzling hot too which only adds to the appeal. This one delivers the heat as well, though not quite at the level of previous books I think, and while I did enjoy it I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed as well. Although to be fair it would have been difficult for this one to live up to the intensity and scorching heat present in the earlier books of the series.

Jane Jameson is back and just as sassy as ever. As usual, things continue to go not-quite-right for her, starting with her dream trip to Europe turning sour with Gabriel's odd behavior and continuing on to several odd and ominous situations she finds herself in once she cuts her trip short and comes home. From dealing with creepy Chamber of Commerce members to creepy letter-writing stalkers, life just continues to be "interesting" for Jane. Watching how she deals with it all proves to be great fun, though you'll likely want to strangle some of the people around her on her behalf.

As is somewhat expected by this point in the series, we see Angel continue to grow and evolve in this book. Only this time she does a bit of regressing as well as she succumbs to chemical temptations for the first time in a long time. She's got her eyes open to it though, and resolves not to fall down that hole again after all the progress she's made in getting her life on track. Still, with events heating up and calling for her to bring her A-game to play more and more at the same time that she finds herself feeling less and less well, it's understandable perhaps that she would look for some artificial pick-me-ups to help her stay sharp. She can only hope that the cost won't be too high...

This book picks up more or less where the first book left off, though there is the implication that a certain amount of time has passed. Jane continues to settle into undead life while having to deal with a variety of different relationship issues, both her own and others'. She manages to navigate all the pitfalls with grace (for the most part anyway), sass, and good ol' Southern charm. While there are certainly limits to how much crap she'll put up with from others, and she rarely hesitates to stand up for herself, still she recognizes that sometimes you have to pick your battles and compromise is often the best policy. Still, for all the leeway she's willing to give those around her, she draws some definite lines in the sand that those others would do well not to try to cross.

Molly Harper is usually a good choice when you're looking for something light and humorous with perhaps a bit of suspense thrown in, and this book is no exception to that. With characters that are genuinely like-able, or at least in the like-to-hate category, it's a fun read that you rarely have to think too hard about. While some things are a bit predictable, much that happens isn't, and following some of the twists and turns is half the fun.

White Trash Zombie Apocalypse by Diana Rowland

Our favorite white trash zombie, Angel Crawford, has enough problems of her own, what with dealing with her alcoholic, deadbeat dad, issues with her not-quite boyfriend, the zombie mafia, industrial espionage and evil corporations. Oh, and it’s raining, and won’t let up.

But things get even crazier when a zombie movie starts filming in town, and Angel begins to suspect that it’s not just the plot of the movie that's rotten. Soon she's fighting her way through mud, blood, bullets and intrigue, even as zombies, both real and fake, prowl the streets.

Angel’s been through more than her share of crap, but this time she’s in way over her head. She’ll need plenty of brainpower to fit all the pieces—and body parts—together in order to save herself, her town, and quite possibly the human race.

Those who have read the first two books of this series should pretty much know what to expect from this book and for the most part you won't be wrong. Angel is still her adorable self and she continues to ratchet the respect bar higher and higher in her continuing journey of self-discovery and ever-growing self-confidence and self-respect. Many of the stories from the first books are continued here and explored further, some from different and sometimes surprising angles. Again there are tropes at work here that I don't personally care for usually, but they didn't annoy me as much in this book as they did in the last one. Perhaps because there are enough surprises in store to keep things interesting.

For those who like their faeries to be a bit on the dark side, this is a good book for you (the entire series as well I'm sure). As the blurb says, the denizens of the Summer Lands aren't entirely good or evil, though there are certainly representatives of both extremes to be found there. Toby may disdain fae society to a large degree, but she definitely knows how to navigate it and how to play by its rules when such is required. This book continues Vanyel's story and shows us much of the man he has become a decade or more after the events of Magic's Pawn. He's grown up a lot and is far more responsible and duty-minded than he was as a teen, yet in many ways that abused and resentful boy is still a part of him. He's learned to put some wrongs behind him, manages through the course of this story to resolve even more old grudges and move on from them, yet some hurts remain all too fresh for him and healing is still a long way off.
