American exchange
student Kate Bordessa has fled to Russia to escape her family's hopes
that she'll become one of the Proffered, human women who feed and mate
with elite vampire warriors. But when she stumbles upon a wounded
vampire in the streets of Moscow, she's instinctively driven to protect
him--and feels an undeniable spark of desire.
Grieving over the
deaths of his brothers, Vampire Warrior King Nikolai Vasilyev has thrown
himself into battling his enemies, focused only on vengeance. Until the
attack that brought him to Kate. Their sexual attraction explodes into a
night of uncontrolled passion--a night that marks them as mates. Is
their connection strong enough to convince them to embrace a destiny
neither of them was expecting?

A worthy successor to In the Service of the King this book packs most of the emotional intensity that the first one had, but seems to me at least to fall a bit short of the total immersiveness that the first book had. With the first one, I was sucked in pretty much from page one and was held in rapt fascination, barely wanting to put it down. With this one I didn't feel like it pulled me in to quite the same degree. The action is too start and stop, with emotions ramping up then being shut down like flipping a switch almost, which does help to build the tension to a certain degree, but also creates a certain confusion and disconnect with the reader. Or at least with this reader.
Welcome to my humble book review blog. My reading tastes are eclectic, spanning various genres including but not limited to: fantasy, romance, young adult titles, erotic adult titles, and most anything with vampires that isn't horror. Some reviews may contain spoilers, but they will carry a warning if so. Disclaimer: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. A paranormal romance that's a bit out of the ordinary, this novella still is well deserving of a place among those dealing with more familiar beings. While the story often seems a bit rushed, and many things happen a bit too quickly to be entirely believable, the writing in this one is top notch and keeps you engaged and willing to overlook the awkward plot moments.

In the Service of the King by Laura Kaye
Kael, Warrior King of
the Vampires, loathes the Night of the Proffering. He needs the blood of
either his mate or a human virgin to maintain his strength, but hasn't
enjoyed the ritual since he lost his mate centuries ago. Kael doesn't
want a new companion, yet his resolve is tested when he lays eyes on his
new offering, Shayla McKinnon. He is drawn to Shayla's beauty and
poise...and the submission she offers. She is eager to give him anything
he wishes, including her innocence, to please him. Will Kael give in to
their overwhelming desire—even if it means risking Shayla's life?

**Warning - this review contains mild to moderate spoilers**
To call this book steamy is a bit of an understatement, though to my mind at least, it stops short of being full out erotica. This is primarily because while there is some very hot sex in here, the heat comes as much or more from the force of Shayla and Kael's attraction to one another. The sexual tension between them ignites practically from their first glimpse of one another, and only continues to grow, with the eventual consummation of their passion only stoking the flames into an inferno.
